When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

If you’re wondering the best time to visit Egypt, the short answer is October through April.

I’ve been traveling to Egypt since I was a kid. I’ve visited during every season imaginable. Trust me when I say the time of year you choose can completely change your trip.

In my opinion, October through April offers the best weather. You’ll actually enjoy exploring instead of trying to survive the heat.

That doesn’t mean you can’t visit during the summer. It just depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.

Visits to Egypt by Season

The Best Time to Visit Egypt in Winter

Winter is one of the busiest times to visit Egypt, and for good reason.

The weather is comfortable. Exploring the pyramids, temples, and markets is much easier when you’re not dealing with extreme heat.

Christmas, New Year’s, and Coptic Christmas also bring more visitors, so expect slightly higher prices.

Personally, I think it’s worth paying a little more.

The only downside? I probably wouldn’t plan a beach vacation. The Red Sea is beautiful, but it’s definitely cooler than most people expect.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt in Spring

Spring is honestly one of my favorite times to be in Egypt.

Early spring feels almost perfect. Cairo usually sits in the 70s, while southern Egypt starts warming up.

As spring goes on, temperatures climb into the 80s and even the 90s.

If I were planning a trip, I’d spend the beginning exploring Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. Then I’d finish at the Red Sea once the weather gets warmer.

Planning your route around the seasons makes a huge difference.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt in Summer

I’m going to be honest.

Summer is brutal.

I grew up spending summers in Egypt, so I know exactly what it’s like. Cairo is hot enough, but Luxor and Aswan are on another level.

Temperatures regularly climb above 100°F.

Even after the sun goes down, it can still feel exhausting.

Would I recommend it?

Not unless summer is your only option.

If it is, don’t cancel your trip. Just plan around the heat. Book sunrise tours, drink more water than you think you need, and save the afternoons for relaxing.

If your goal is the Red Sea or the Mediterranean, summer actually works well. Just don’t expect to comfortably spend hours walking around temples.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt in Fall

Fall is another one of my favorite seasons.

October is easily one of the best times to visit Egypt.

The weather is still warm enough for beach days, but sightseeing becomes enjoyable again.

It’s also one of my favorite times for a Nile cruise. You can relax by the pool during the day without feeling like you’re melting.

If I had to recommend one month to first-time visitors, October would probably be it.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt for Nile River Cruises

If you’re planning a Nile cruise, I’d also stick to October through April.

Luxor and Aswan sit much farther south than Cairo, which means they’re always hotter.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt for the Red Sea

If you’re heading to Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, April, May, October, and November are hard to beat.

The water is warm.

The weather is comfortable.

You can actually enjoy both the beach and sightseeing.

Summer is still great if you’re planning to spend most of your time in the water.

When Should You Avoid Visiting Egypt?

If I had to choose the worst time to visit, it would be mid-May through September.

The further south you travel, the hotter it gets.

Luxor and Aswan can feel overwhelming during the middle of the day.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go if that’s your only chance.

It just means you need to plan smarter.

Book early morning tours.

Carry plenty of water.

Wear breathable linen or cotton.

Give yourself breaks throughout the day.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Egypt?

If you asked me to pick just three months, I’d choose:

  • April
  • October
  • November

The weather is warm without being unbearable.

You can comfortably visit temples, take a Nile cruise, and still spend time at the beach.

For first-time visitors, October gets my vote every single time.

What Should You Pack for the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

Packing depends entirely on when you’re visiting.

In winter, layers are your best friend. Temperatures can change a lot between morning and night.

During warmer months, linen and cotton will make your life much easier.

Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.

And please don’t forget sunscreen.

Nobody enjoys spending their vacation dealing with a sunburn.
